No man is an island…

Will (Hugh Grant), a może lepiej Super Will to główny aktor swojego życia czyli the Will Show polegającym na przyjemnym spędzaniu czasu. Jego chęć do spotkań z atrakcyinymi, samotnymi matkami prowadzi jednak do znajomości z dwunastoletnim Marcusem (Nicolas Hoult), którego życie dalece odbiega od The Will Show. W konsekwencji uporządkowany styl życia Willa zaczyna się walić a on sam zachowywać w sposób całkowicie dla niego niewytłumaczalny. Poniżej prezentujemy recenzję autorstwa Michała z IB:

On the 26th of February we saw (of course because of the English Film Club) the movie ‘About a Boy’. The movie was based on the book with the same title, written by Nick Hornby. That book was his best selling novel, but back to the movie. It is movie from 2002 directed by Chris and Paul Weitz. The film stars Hugh Grant, Toni Collete and in his first movie – Nicholas Hoult. This movie is about… ABOUT A BOY trying to make his mum proud and happy because she is sometimes depressed. It is also about a well-off man, who doesn’t have to work because his dad has written a popular Christmas song. The man wants to get girlfriends, no matter what he is going to do to get one. The action kicks off when the boy and the man – two completely different worlds – meet together. The film was nominated to an Oscar, to Golden Globes, to BAFTA awards and it has won AFI Awards for ‘Movie of the Year’. The movie was magnetic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes serious, but it was absolutely great!. I can’t wait for more great films in the English Club!

Dla nieobecnych kilka cytatów z filmu i zdjęcie (zdjęcie A + zdjęcie B) pokazujące jak bardzo można się zmienić.

Will: The thing is, a person’s life is like a TV show. I was the star of The Will Show. And The Will Show wasn’t an ensemble drama. Guests came and went, but I was the regular. It came down to me and me alone. If Marcus’ mum couldn’t manage her own show, if her ratings were falling, it was sad, but that was her problem. Ultimately, the whole single mum plotline was a bit complicated for me.

Christine: Oh, no… it’s just I thought you had hidden depths.

Will: No, no, you’ve always had that wrong about me. I really am this shallow.

Will: Me, I didn’t mean anything. About anything, to anyone. And I knew that guaranteed me a long, depression-free life.

Will: All men are islands. And what’s more, this is the time to be one. This is an island age. A hundred years ago, for example, you had to depend on other people. No one had TV or CDs or DVDs or home espresso makers. As a matter of fact they didn’t have anything cool. Whereas now you can make yourself a little island paradise.

Will: My life is made up of units of time. Buying CDs – two units. Eating lunch – three units. Exercising – two units. All in all, I had a very full life. It’s just that it didn’t mean anything.

Marcus: I think I killed a duck!
